Hadrian’s Wall is an excellent flip-and-write game that offers more complexity than other games of its kind. During the game’s six rounds, you gain workers and resources to build a wall, grow your city, and defend it against invaders.
Each round, a random card is revealed that lists specific workers and resources, which all players gain. This contributes to the variability of the game as what these cards provide dictates strategy and limits options. Additionally, players draw two cards from their own deck every round – one becomes an active card that provides more resources, while the other is tucked under their player board, serving as an endgame scoring goal. The freedom to choose your goals is a great feature!

This is a deep game that requires you to think and time your actions well. Each sheet has numerous sections, and you cannot do everything during a given game, so you have to prioritize your actions. Each area on the sheets has its own rules and the rulebook does an excellent job of explaining everything. It’s also very likely that you focus more on some areas in your first few games and explore the rest as you get better at the game.
The game mechanics create a satisfying domino effect of actions. Sometimes by marking a box on your sheet, you can gain bonuses that chain into more bonuses. With careful planning, it’s often possible to obtain several benefits and get a lot done with a single action.
Although the game can be played with up to 6 players, it’s an excellent game for solo play, mainly because there’s minimal player interaction. So, those looking for high interaction in their games may not find it appealing.

Overall, Hadrian’s Wall is a fantastic game that offers satisfying combos and engaging gameplay that can be played in under an hour. I’ve been having a lot of fun playing this game and it’s taken the crown from Dinosaur Island: Rawr ‘n Write as my favorite roll/flip-and-write game.
