Do you like Lost Ruins of Arnak? Have you played t Do you like Lost Ruins of Arnak? Have you played the Twisted Paths expansion?Twisted Paths is the last major expansion for the game. Besides adding more variety through new dig sites, assistants, guardians, idols, and research track reward tiles, the two new maps and their research tracks introduce new mechanics to the game. Both maps are printed on two sides of a new board that is bigger than the original.Let's talk about the Owl Temple side of the new board today, which has the simpler of the new research tracks. One of the best changes of the board is a new tier of Level I sites. You can pay three compasses and two coins to dig at this tier, but as a reward you get two idols instead of one (one is facedown, similar to Level II sites). This makes idols more readily available in the game, which is a welcome change. Besides the normal uses of idols for player board actions and cards, you now gather a new type of puzzle-piece-shaped temple tile from the temple. When you get two pieces and combine them, you get an extra idol action space (only normal actions and not the blue character ones).There is also a new player piece that moves up the research track: the lantern. At certain levels of the temple, you can retire your magnifying glass into new spots on the two sides of the temple, collect a puzzle-piece temple tile, and then start moving up with your lantern from the bottom of the track. You still have to pay the costs to move up, but the rewards are stronger for the lantern. At the end of the game, the lantern scores points in the same way as your other tokens.Arnak is one of our favourite and most played games. We are always happy to get it to the table and enjoy playing it every time. Expansions for a game like that are always great. With the two new research tracks, the game now has eight, which gives you a lot of options. The new Owl Temple research track includes enough changes to introduce new challenges without adding too much complexity.What are your thoughts? Have you played any games from the Kinfire Delve s Have you played any games from the Kinfire Delve series?As a series of cooperative games, Kinfire Delve revolves around playing cards from your hand to beat challenges and delve down a well to reach and face the master of the well, the final and toughest challenge.You start the game with a hero and a hand of cards. The goal is to exhaust the well deck and reach the bottom of the well. There are four Well cards on the board at any given time. When you defeat a challenge, it's replaced with a card from the well deck.Each of these challenges has a type, difficulty, reward, and penalty. Each round, you pick a challenge, play cards from your hand, and roll dice to match or exceed its difficulty. If you manage to do that, the challenge is discarded, and you gain the reward. If you fail, you suffer the penalty, but add the amount of progress you made to the challenge and can attempt it again.Most rewards let you delve down the well, which means you discard cards from the well deck. Most penalties deal damage to the heroes, and if your HP reaches zero, you lose the game.There are three games in the series: Vainglory's Grotto, Scorn's Stockade, and Callous' Lab. The first is fairly easy and streamlined, the second gets more difficult, and the third is significantly harder. The last two also have more depth, more meaningful choices, and more ways of winning or losing.Kinfire Delve is an excellent series and among the best solo games I've played. They are quick, challenging, and fun. The component quality is excellent, their prices are affordable, and the art style is gorgeous. Because of the dice roll, there's a luck element to the game, and you have to push your luck to save your cards. If you don't like luck in games, this series is not for you. But if you don't mind it, these games are excellent options for solo or coop sessions.What are your thoughts? Have you played Woodcraft? Woodcraft is a medium- Have you played Woodcraft?Woodcraft is a medium-weight euro game that revolves around dice manipulation and resource management. You take actions to improve your workshop, gather resources, plant trees, and gain lumber to turn into goods that fulfill contracts and earn you points.The action selection mechanic of the game is brilliant and by far the best part of it. Selected actions move around a circular board, and the ones that are not popular get stronger over time through bonuses. This is not new in games, but it's implemented seamlessly here: the moving pieces of the main board handle it naturally, with no extra tokens or markers needed. This also makes action selection consistently interesting: sometimes you want an action, but another one is too good to pass on.You only get 14 main actions in the entire game. But on any turn, you can pay 3 lantern tokens for a bonus action, and those tokens can be earned in multiple ways. That might still not sound like enough to do much, but your turns get bigger and bigger as the game goes on. You'd be surprised how much you'll be able to do in your last few turns.The dice mechanics are also clever and very thematic. The three dice colors each represent a different type of lumber. You can modify their values by sawing them, gluing them together, or using helpers to do it for you. Unlocking these tools and helpers by improving your workshop is a fun part of the game.There are some fiddly rules that will have you go back to the rulebook a few times during your first couple of plays. Besides that, the rules and actions are fairly straightforward.While this is subjective, the overall art could be better. The helpers' faces in particular look strange and unsettling. The order cards, however, are beautiful, and the graphic design and iconography are straightforward and well done.Overall, this is a very enjoyable game with clever and thematic mechanics. If you like medium-weight euro games, Woodcraft is certainly worth a shot.What are your thoughts? Have you played Americas?Hummingbirds, introduced in the Americas expansion, are one of the biggest mechanical changes in any of Wingspan's expansions. They come in a deck of mini cards and are available during the game on a shared display called the garden. Each player also gets a hummingbird board and an overlay for their player board, which adds 3 spots to the left, one for each habitat. After taking an action in a habitat, you also take a hummingbird action. If the corresponding space is empty, you attract a hummingbird from the garden and earn a benefit. If it's already occupied, you return the hummingbird and move up the track for that bird's type. Each track scores victory points at the end of the game.Attracting hummingbirds provides various benefits, including cards, nectar, and moving up a hummingbird track. Besides adding more depth, these actions give you more resources and can bail you out when you are short one egg or one resource. All of this means that you can ramp up faster at the beginning of the game, which is a welcome change. That said, they also add complexity and make the game longer, so these changes will likely be divisive.One issue I have with the expansion is the hummingbird track boards. These could be much better and more functional if they were dual-layered with recessed tracks. A small board with 5 tiny tokens is prone to getting messed up during the game, and it's nearly impossible to trace what you've done and where the tokens should be if that happens.What are your thoughts?
